Biomedical Technology involves the study of medical electronic equipment generally found in hospitals and healthcare facilities. Although the primary focus is placed on the installation, repair, calibration and safety testing of medical equipment normally found in these environments, students learn hospital operations, administration as pertaining to them, medical field safety, and operations of biomedical facilities. In today's highly technical and rapidly changing medical world, human life depends not only on the expertise of doctors, nurses, and technicians, but also on the proper functioning of sophisticated biomedical equipment. The training and certification of Biomedical Technicians is critical for the reduction in the probability of impaired judgments, due to imprecise and inaccurate information gleaned from medical instruments. Total eradication of these shortcomings may be impossible, but, in any efficiently run health care environment, all medical equipment must function at an optimum level, and must be serviced and operated by proficient biomedical technicians

The Biomedical Technician programme runs for an 18 month period, and consists of 23 modules, with a total of 1400 contact hours, which would generate135 credits. It offers knowledge of the principles of modern biomedical techniques, knowledge and skills as it relates to computers and communication technology, specialized software, and computers designed to communicate with specific pieces of hardware, medical computer networks, and the proper procedure in the care, handling, maintenance, installation, calibration, and repair of biomedical equipment designed to diagnose and treat medical conditions. This equipment may include anaesthesiology machines, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, defibrillators, radiology equipment, ventilators, vital sign monitors, and medical imaging equipment (x-rays, CAT scanners, and ultrasound equipment). Not only must they know how to maintain and repair this equipment quickly and efficiently, but they must also understand its interaction with the patient, be able to perform the necessary repairs or adjustments without disturbing the patient, and be able to teach its safe and proper use to others. The student must demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours expected of a technician employed in a hospital or healthcare environment. Once the student has acquired this level of training in areas unique to specific products, the student should become a profitable and efficient part of the medical workforce, which would be assessed by qualified biomedical engineers and technicians during their externship
